Optimize your articles by getting to the front

To many bloggers, SEO is boring and consists of additional work on their post. But we’re pretty sure you don’t want to be all the way back on page 12; you want to be within the top 10 so you need to utilize SEO to make sure to get there and promote your posts.

SEO in 2016 is not about optimizing titles and using repetitive keywords. It’s about creating content that is relevant and valuable; supported with optimization features.

Small changes can have a big effect on your traffic. We’ve listed below the steps to follow that will help you generate more traffic and get more exposure and visitors from organic search.

Choose a search-friendly platform

The choice of the content management system (CMS) in which you are going to create your article is very important.

The most popular and used platform for blogging is WordPress because it offers the best combination of design, user friendliness and search engine optimization.

For other options of self-hosted blogs, you can refer to Typepad or Blogger. Both will insure good results in terms of search engine optimization and ease of use.

We’re going to presume you chose WordPress as a blogging platform.

Change your permalink structure

Every post has an ID that is used in the URL in a permalink format that doesn’t look so good.

For example, when this post was created it had this link by default:

This link will make it hard for search engines to understand and find your post because the URL defines the subject of the article. Whenever you start your blog, make sure you change your permalink structure so it uses the title of post in its URL.

The new URL of this blog is:

Make good use of titles and meta tags

Every post in WordPress has a title and a meta description. Both of them will show on the page results.

For example, this is how this post will show Google.

Title and meta description

As a ranking factor, Google uses the title of the post and it uses the keyword in the title to rank and sort the content. Therefore, you need to choose a main keyword or Focus Keyword for the article that needs to be in the title and in the paragraph just under it for it to be close to the title.

The meta description will show right under the title but is not used as a ranking factor. It is only shown to describe the content of your post and give an idea about what the visitor will find when they click on the link. Meta description should be under 160 characters to be fully shown.

Focus on relevant keywords

Using the same keyword so many times in your post doesn’t not have the same effect it did previously; when Google used to look for keyword frequency in one article.

In fact, Google will detect relevant keywords instead of looking at the frequency of the keywords. This means that you don’t need to overuse your main keyword in your article, you simply have to place your keywords in headings. Use H1, H2, H3 and H4 headings to divide your text into small batches of content and make it easier for the visitor to read.

Optimize your images

The use of images is very important in SEO since Google finds the use of images in an article eye catching and engaging. It uses the “alt” tags given to each picture to gain more explanation about the content of the post.

Every image on your post should have a relevant file name. In WordPress, when the image is uploaded in the library, you can give it a title, a caption, and alt text and a description.

The alt text is the text that Google will display whenever the image is not published. It is used to describe the image and is very important to fill.

Write long articles for better SEO

Google’s algorithm gives more weight and importance to longer articles and improves its ranking.

Long articles are more shareable and have better presence in search results. They have a variety of keywords that would be the reason of better visibility.

It’s better also to write the article without having SEO in mind and optimize later when it’s done. After finishing your article, search for commonly used keywords and optimize the content you created.

Use links to reference others

Whenever you mention another blog post or another blogger, reference the information you are presenting by adding a link to the post or person in question. These backlinks will increase your chances to be referenced back and will give you credibility. Quality links will make you rank higher in search result pages.

Have a subscription option

If a visitor finds your blog interesting, he might want to receive more articles frequently. Therefore, have a subscription field on your blog to allow followers to receive emails or a notification of your latest uploads.

Use social media to expand the reach of your articles

Promote your posts on your social media platforms to gain more exposure. Use programs like Hootsuite to schedule your posts ahead of time. Also, provide social sharing on your article to allow interested visitors to share your articles.

Boost your SEO and engage visitors by optimizing your articles. Blogging platforms have all the options for a better ranking by providing tools to help you create an interesting blog with valuable that your visitors will enjoy.
