Generative AI Art for 3D Mapping Show

Is using AI to execute big scale animation projects a fantasy?

A new frontier has emerged in the 2D and 3D animation landscape, and seems to be here to stay and develop. Big scale animation shows, once solely reliant on human ingenuity and time consuming processes, are now being revolutionized by the power of generative Artificial Intelligence. A variety of AI tools are indeed paving the way for unprecedented levels of creativity and efficiency.

The rise of generative AI in animation

Traditionally, creating animations on a large scale required extensive human effort, from character design to scene creation and animation itself. However, with the advent of generative AI, animators now have powerful tools at their disposal that can streamline and augment the creative and technical process. These AI algorithms are capable of generating potentially an infinity of characters, environments, and styles, thereby significantly reducing production time and costs. Midjourney and Stable Diffusion model coupled with Automatic 1111 or Comfy UI stand as powerful tools taking animation processes and outcomes to the next level.

4 cases where AI tools can be found to add value to the creation and execution process:
1. Character Design: AI-powered tools can assist animators in generating diverse and visually compelling characters, from humanoid heroes to otherworldly creatures. By analyzing existing designs and datasets, AI algorithms can offer suggestions and variations, providing artists with a wealth of inspiration to draw from.
2. Scene Generation: Creating intricate environments for animation can be a time-consuming process, but with AI, it becomes more efficient. By training AI models on vast libraries of assets and reference materials, animators can quickly generate detailed backgrounds and landscapes that enhance the storytelling experience.
3. Animation Assistance: While animation remains a highly skilled craft, AI can help streamline the process by automating some tasks and executing movement. This allows animators to focus on the creative aspects of their work while AI handles some of the technicalities.
4. Texturing and Integration with 3d Software: Integrating Artificial Intelligence workflows and output within the overall working process to deliver artistic content is intuitive and effective, saving artists significant time and effort. Additionally, using AI-powered tools and outcomes, especially for texturing, in parallel with traditional 3D software can ensure a cohesive final product. This level of intelligent assistance not only accelerates workflow but also fosters exploration and experimentation, leading to more innovative and visually compelling results.

Enhancing creativity with AI

Generative AI doesn’t just automate mundane tasks, it also serves as a catalyst for creativity. By leveraging AI algorithms, animators can explore new artistic styles, experiment with unconventional storytelling techniques, and push the boundaries of visual expression. Whether it’s generating creatures for a fantasy or simulating complex physics for a sci-fi adventure, AI empowers animators to unleash their imagination like never before.

Case Studies: Cre8mania leverages AI to create mega shows for Riyadh and Jeddah Season

Let’s take a closer look at how generative AI is being used by Cre8mania’s artists to create and execute big scale animation shows. You’ll also find our take on our experience with AI tools and it advancements in the past 2 years.

Riyadh Season, 2022

Few months after Stable Diffusion’s debut to the public, Cre8mania took on the challenge to pioneer AI assisted mega shows, well aware about the lack of control, knowledge and testing regarding this new tool. One of the main animations Cre8mania executed for Riyadh Season’s screens centered entirely around visuals generated by Artificial Intelligence, which were then slightly edited and refined using Blender to reflect the theme of “French artistic movements.”

What we liked

  • Ability to present one full AI animation show (the first in the Middle East)
  • Availability of infinite possibilities
  • Ease of translating a vision into visuals according to the theme presented
  • Ability to explore ways that were once unimaginable

What we didn’t like

  • Flickering
  • Limited motion
  • High unpredictability
  • Randomness and time-consumption
  • Lack of optimization

Boulevard Jeddah, Asia Show 2023

Cre8mania’s experts ventured into the vibrant culture of Asia by presenting 2 creative AI assisted animations concepts: Japanese origami and Phi Ta Khon festival. Scenes, characters and motion were meticulously generated using Stable Diffusion then reworked by our artists in Blender and After Effects.

What we liked and What went better

  • Increased control
  • Increased precision for characters details, scenes and styles
  • Time efficiency

Conclusion

As generative AI continues to evolve, the possibilities for innovation are limitless. Indeed, the intersection of art and AI is reshaping the landscape of big scale animation shows, unlocking new levels of creativity, efficiency, and innovation. By harnessing the power of Artificial Intelligence, animators can push the boundaries of what’s possible, bringing fantastical worlds and captivating characters to life in ways that were once unimaginable. As we look to the future, one thing is certain: the fusion of artistry and AI will continue to drive the evolution of animation, captivating audiences and inspiring creators for years to come.
